7 Tips to Finding the Right Sprinkler System Contractor

If you’re in the market for a sprinkler system, you want to feel confident that your contractor is a professional.

Hiring a Professional Lawn Sprinkler Contractor

You don’t want just any contractor to come to your home to design and install your new lawn and garden sprinkler.

Instead, you want a professional who has the skills and experience to handle the installation. Plus, you prefer a contractor who’ll maintain your system throughout the year.

Here are seven tips to find the best landscape irrigation contractor:
  1. Get multiple bids: You don’t want to settle on the first contractor even if he or she comes highly recommended. Instead, you want to interview at least three contractors to see which one is the best fit for you.
  2. Check their references: If you think hiring a contractor is similar to conducting a job interview, you’re correct. However, installing a sprinkler system is a significant investment—and you want to make sure the job gets done on budget, on time and correctly. In addition to checking references, look at reviews on Google and Yelp to read other customers’ feedback.
  3. Trained installer: Make sure your contractor received the correct training on sprinkler system installation, irrigation techniques and technology. Since you’ll choose a specific sprinkler brand, make sure your contractor has experience with that brand.
  4. Understands landscape principles: Your contractor should coach you on different micro-climates within your yard. Moreover, your contractor should break up your property into hydrozones and instruct you on the best annuals, perennials, shrubs and trees to place in each zone.
  5. Advocates safety and compliance: Your irrigation contractor should comply with local building codes, know how to prevent backflow problems, and incorporate proper installation techniques and other critical knowledge.
  6. Up-to-date with insurance: Make sure that your contractor carries insurance and workers’ compensation in case there’s an accident that leads to property damage or injury.
  7. Make sure you read through your contract: Once you have settled on a contractor, make sure you review the agreement before signing it. If you have any questions or concerns, ask your contractor. If you have red flags, don’t sign the contract.
